Week 5 of Learning 2.0 had us exploring some of the *real* library applications. I registered for Shelfari without any difficulty... the question is... what to put on my shelf. ;-)
Unfortunately, I do not make time for books so I did not have too many to put on my shelf. The site makes me think I need to read more. I can find out what others with similar taste are reading... yes... that is called social networking.
I logged into the Jefferson County Library Coop. The interface is simplistic... I know that is not a bad thing but as a librarian, I like advanced features of search interfaces. I think the functionality is fine but I did not have anything earth shattering to share.

Week 4... many weeks later
I have been a little slack about my blogging. There seems to be a lot of competing priorities but what is new. ;-)
Week 4 of our learning 2.0 journey focused on using tagging and folksonomies for social bookmarking and sharing photos. I have to admit that I have been using Flickr since last fall so I am familiar with the site. I finally bumped up against the free offerings of Flickr and decided to pay the $24 to upgrade to the pro version. I am somewhat torn between just flickring and my $99 DotMac account which I have had for years. I am in time crunch to figure that out as soon as I can but that is another issue. Back to Flickr... I think this is a great way to share photos and link to others with similar interests. Plus I think it gives you the ability to search for different perspectives of the same event. For example, I missed the San Antonio Spurs River Parade after the NBA Finals but I was glad to see the number of photos of the event on Flickr. It is NOT like being there but it was nice to see some pictures that were not just the ones that the media would show.
The other part of Week 4 was using a social bookmarking tool like Flickr. I just recently set up a Del.icio.us account. I am enjoying what I am seeing so far. It is easy to use and easy to tag things of interest PLUS I get to see what my friends are tagging. This can take up some time but I would use it as a tool to keep up to date.

MyFace and Spacebook
Week 3 of our Learning 2.0 activity was on social networking services like Facebook and Twitter. I have been using Facebook since last Fall plus I wrote the exercises so they were a bit of a breeze. ;-)
I think this is a neat tool. It is a lot less busy than MySpace which is Facebook's biggest competitor. Facebook originally started out as mostly a tool for college students and has gradually grown into its own to include people from all walks of life.
In late Spring, Facebook also announced their support for development of third party applications or widgets. I think these have REALLY taken off. There are soooo many more applications in Facebook since I started using the service.
Twitter is the other service focused on in this exercise. I like Twitter and I do "Twit" but I am still interested in the real utility of this microblogging service. I did log into Twittervision to get the real-time map of "what people are doing." It is strangely addictive.

Week 2 of Learning 2.0
Several weeks later on a Sunday night I am finally touching my Learning 2.0 stuff again. This week we are learning about wikis. Aside from Wikipedia, I have used the Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki a fair amount. I think it is a great resource. Meredith Farkas does a great job with some assistance keeping it current.
What did you find interesting about wikis?
I think it wikis are a neat tool. It encourages open collaboration and gives everyone (depending on the wiki restrictions) the ability to add their knowledge to a collective.
What do you think libraries could do with wikis?
I think there is a lot of evidence for using wikis as library subject guides.
How would wikis be useful to you personally?
I have a couple of wikis for my professional association.
Do you see potential uses for wikis?
Yes, I think they are a great way to organize a project or event, collaborate with people, and communicate with intereted parties.

Everything to everyone...
Not unlike other types of Web 2.0 services, Blogger allows you to personalize your space in several ways. I clicked the "customize" like in the upper right and then on template and Blogger gave me the option to "add a page element." Ooo... cool! I added a video element from You Tube by specifying terms for You Tube to search with and posted my changes. Blogger automagically added videos from You Tube using the terms I specified to search by. Cool!

Beginning blogging
I never claimed to be much of a blogger so here goes my first attempt. I did follow my instructions and I found out that I did not verify some of the Learning 2.0 exercises I borrowed from PLCMC so I ended up changing some of them as I went along. Like many of the 2.0 services, setting up a blog was not too bad. Blogger now requires that you have a Google account which is free but is also an additional login. Blogger is nice since it allows a WYSIWYG editor as well as an HTML editor for those gear heads.
